Background features of the zone
The zone is bounded by South Gondar Zone in the North, Oromia National Regional State in the South, West Gojam Zone in the West, and South Wollo Zone in the East. The total area of the zone is 13,809.08 Sq.km and no of population is 2,171,998 (1994) and its climatic condition. Wurch-2.8%, Degga-45.2%, W/degga-34.6% and kola-17.4%. Annual rains fall of the zone 1200 – 1500 mm per annual.
Economical condition of the zone
It is obvious that our country Ethiopia is one of the poor countries in the world. Due to this fact majority of people live below the poverty line. It is also true here that our zone’s people are poor economically. They practiced or exercised on traditional farming system. In other words, majority (89%) of the people are engaged in traditional agricultural system. Poor animal husbandry, with poor animal feeding & poor animal health condition exacerbated the situation. However, in the zone more than 8 potential rivers are flowing throughout the year, and people don’t have the habit of using irrigation. That is why people’s living standard is too low.

Social conditions
People faced with numerous and complicated social hazards such as prostitution, HIV/AIDS, rapid population growth, early marriage, drought starvation etc, as a result of these street children have been increasing alarmingly.
Mainly children, youth, Women and the elderly people are exposed to different social hazards. Now a day on the basis of developmental social welfare policy, educational policy, population policy, women’s policy, health policy and others help to create awareness for the people on how to minimize social problems. More over, social service institutions such as schools, health posts, clinics, health stations, and hospitals are constructed at kebele level. There are 864 Primary schools 11 Schools (grades 9-10) 3 Preparatory schools for higher education 98 health posts 14 health stations and 2 hospitals in the zone.
Major activities of Social and Labour affairs in East Gojam
- To reduce social problems
- To initiate the idler to involve in different developmental activities in order to minimize social problems.
- To rehabilitate people who are living in difficult circumstance particularly children, women, disable persons, old age, prostitutes, the street children etc.
- Care and Support for people under serious problems.
- Awareness creation regarding to harmful traditional practices, HIV/AIDS, to avoid the wrong perception of the society towards Gender, disable persons, old age, people living with HIV/AIDS, to the concerned bodies.
- To evaluate and control NGOs whether they are going on according to their plan of agreement or not.
- Giving advice and counseling service for departing families, people with HIV/AIDS, people who are in prison etc.
- To form and strength CRC committee and clubs at woreda, kebele and school levels.
- To give revolving fund (Credit service) for women unemployed youth, for prostitutes and for street children.
- Monitoring of professional and health security.
- To maintain good industrial environment.

In general in our zone there are different vulnerable Societies. It is known that 50% the population are Children, these children are not nourished and they are exposed for different health problems such as Blindness and hand kipped ness. As we have taken samples from 4 towns (D/markos, Dejen, Bichna & Mota, we have got 1162 disabled persons and 1794 prostitutes (Mota, D/work, Bichna, M/lemariam, & D/markos 112 old age (Mota, Bichana & Machakil) 35 harmful tradition practice.
