North Gonder is one of the 11 Zonal Administrative of the Amhara National Regional States(ANRS) with a total area of 55,734 km 2 and it has 18 woredas with a total population of 3,046,591 ( Projected 2005, Regional planning and economic development bureau). The zone is bordering with the Sudan in the west, with Tigray region in the North and North West and in the south it also share border with south Gonder zone and Lake Tana. Out of the total population, 88% of them are engaged in agriculture and the rest are occupied in various walks of life.
North Gonder Labour & Social Affairs branch office (ZOLSA) Establishment
The branch office as part of the regional Labour & Social Affairs Bureau (BOLSA) established, with different powers & duties, by the ANRS proclamation No 4/1995 article 16, and reestablished by the ANRS proclamation No 60/2002 article 16.

Vision
To see the people of N/Gonder who are able to work engaged in productive employment and welfare of the society is secured.
Mission
Based on the available and newly established regional policies and laws, and coordinating the support of concerned bodies and the active participation of the community;
- Ensure the prevalence of industrial peace through advocacy for the respect of the rights of both labour and management and for a work environment that is safe and free from all hazards to worker's health as well as conducive to productivity, and promoting job placement services.
- Protect and promote the rights and welfare of; children, youth, women, families, physically and mentally disabled by various social problems through expanding and implementing developmental, preventive and rehabilitative programs.

Manpower
Currently the branch office has 32 permanent employees out of which 3 B.Sc holders, 4 BA holders, 6 diploma holders, 6 certificates in various fields of study and the remaining are high school level graduates. Major social problems in the zone There is no through study on the magnitude of social problems in the entire zone however, from the data conducted at different times and from the observations, the following problems are identified as the major ones;
- street children & mothers
- prostitution
- high no of orphans
- disability
- street mothers
- begging
- HIV/AIDS
- harmful traditional practices
- unemployment
- labour disputes
